WE HONOR SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Lord, with love and compassion,
watch over our pets and all animals.
Keep them in good health.
Guard them against trouble.

May the wisdom of Saint Francis
and our love for these animals
deepen our respect for all your creation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

From the desk of Donna Kruszona, Principal:

Saint Francis worked for the poor. He tried to bring peace, and he showed great love for all of God’s creatures. In honor of his feast day, October 4th, Friday, at 11:30 we will gather on the blacktop by the basketball courts for a Blessing of the Animals. Any parents who would like to bring their students’ pet at that time are welcome to do so. This is just prior to dismissal.

Gerardy Photography will take individual school pictures on Tuesday, October 7th. This will be an optional non-uniform dress day. Shirts with collars are required for boys. This is a reminder to the girls that clothing must be modest. Tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, plunging necklines, cut-offs and short shorts are not permitted. Students may wear nice jeans. If you are unsure of what exactly non-uniform dress is, please refer to the second to the last page of your handbook/calendar. Of course, uniforms are always appropriate.

END OF THE DAY PRAYER

Lord, bless the work that I have done,
And bless the evening still to come.

Let my return a blessing be
To all who share a home with me.

Give us with food and rest and play
A fitting end to this good day.

From webs of sin grant us release,
And touch our planet with your peace.

The Magazine/Cookie Dough Fund Raiser ENDS THIS MONDAY, September 22nd. Please remember to support the Magazine/Cookie Dough Drive. This is an easy way to renew your favorite magazines or sign up for a new one! They make for great birthday or Christmas presents, and it’s actually less expensive to purchase a subscription than to pick one up at the check stand! Ask family, friends, your doctor, dentist or even your salon to renew their subscriptions with you! Need a quick dessert when people come over…just pop this delicious cookie dough in the oven for 20 minutes! SJA makes 45 cents for every dollar raised so if you sell $100 the school makes $45.00. Cookie Dough pick up date is Thursday, October 23rd. Please note that we have nowhere to keep frozen cookie dough so you must plan to be available to pick up your cookie dough that day or make arrangements for someone else to do so for you. Checks are to be written to the Saint James Academy Foundation. If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Bear anytime at (858)829-6872.

This Wednesday envelope is part of a system that has been set up to ensure that families receive all school communication. It is sent home with the oldest sibling in the family. For continued accurate and consistent communication it must remain this way. If your oldest has difficulty remembering to give this envelope to you, then please remember to ask them for it. You also may access this newsletter and download most forms in this envelope at our website http://www.saintjamesacademy.com

As we approach the seventh anniversary of 9/11 and remember the victims of the many conflicts in many countries, once more let us join together in a:

World Peace Prayer

Lead me from death to life,
from falsehood to truth.
Lead me from despair to hope
from fear to trust.
Lead me from hate to love,
from war to peace.
Let peace fill our
our world, our universe.

From the desk of Donna Kruszona, Principal:

It was very nice to see so many parents at the Back-To-School Night last week. Thank you for putting your children first and taking the time to get to know their teachers. Parent involvement is what makes the Academy the special place that it is. There are many ways for you to take part in the SJA activities, as Mr. Dennis Green so wonderfully pointed out in his great talk. Whether volunteering in classrooms, the library, the office, coaching after-school teams or out on the playground, your presence is needed and appreciated. Mr. Paul Barton certainly made his point for the Golf Tournament that will be held on Monday, October 27th. Who can doubt how much fun this is going to be whether playing or volunteering that day? Due to the generosity of the many volunteers’ time, talent, or treasure, we have aides in every classroom, music and art programs, state-of-the-art technology for teachers and students, a well appointed and maintained school plant, and so many other extras that add to the overall excellent educational opportunities for the students attending St. James Academy. A huge thank you to Chris Bizzack, Marie Green and Rita Cooper for providing great food and hospitality for our First-Day-of-School Coffee and Back-to-School Night. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all in attendance.

The Magazine/Cookie Dough package will be coming home with your students today . This is an easy way to renew your favorite magazines or sign up for a new one! They make for great birthday or Christmas presents, and it’s actually less expensive to purchase a subscription than to pick one up at the check stand! Ask family, friends, your doctor, dentist or even your salon to renew their subscription with you!

If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Bear anytime at (858)829-6872.

IT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT ALL EMERGENCY/PERMISSION FORMS ARE COMPLETED AND TURNED INTO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY.

Hello everyone. Thank you for your show of support for our Golf Tournament “campaign” at the Back to School night September 4th. A number of people stopped by to offer their assistance, either with time, contacts or potential auction items, but I did not have a pen and paper to jot down their contact info, and they have not contacted me via the website so I can follow up. So if I could impose upon you to contact me directly via e-mail so I can start working with you for your particular commitment of time, contacts, prizes etc, that would be very helpful. You can reach me at paul@sjafoundation.org or via the web site at www.sjafoundation.org, or call at 760-944-8120. Thank you. Paul Barton SJAF Golf Tournament Chair

Any family that pays their tuition annually or semi-annually and has not yet paid, there is an invoice in this envelope. Thank you.

St. James Academy Parent Council will meet in the Ministry Center tomorrow, Thursday, September 11th at 8:00 a.m. All parents are welcome to attend. If you have an agenda item, please notify Dana Mueller at 792-8209. All parents are welcome to attend.

The St. James Academy Advisory Board will meet on Wednesday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Faculty Room.

Please join the parishioners and Academy students for 8:00 Mass on Friday, September 12th as the Seventh Grade assists with the Liturgy.

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are brought to eternal life.
Amen Saint Francis of Assisi

O come, let us sing to the Lord.
Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of
our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with
thanksgiving;
Let us make a joyful noise to him with
songs of praise!
O come, let us sing to the Lord.

From the desk of Donna Kruszona, Principal:

It was so nice to have a three-day weekend at the end of our first week of school. But now it is time to get down to the routine of classes and homework.

This Thursday, September 4th, we have scheduled BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT. This meeting is for parents only and is a once-a-year opportunity to hear about all that is happening in our parish and your student’s school. I look forward to seeing you in the Parish Hall at 6:00 p.m.

New Year but same issues with uniforms: Let us begin with the following rules. The full list of uniform regulations is in your Calendar/Handbook (close to the back page) that came home in this envelope last week. Note specifically only white socks are allowed; boy’s belts match their pants/shorts. Hair length for boys in not below their eyebrows and cannot touch their collar or cover their ears. Girls need to not to have hair in their eyes and their hair must be their natural color. Any further concerns or questions please call or email me. One last concern, we realize that many of you wish your children to have cell phones in the event of an emergency. They may have them in their backpacks or lockers. However, they are not to have them on their person. If cell phones are used before 3:00, they will be taken and the parents will need to pick them up from me in my office. If a student must call a parent, they may use the office phone. This is a policy used throughout the Diocese.

Please remind your students that if they are missing their lunch, they are to come to the front office to see if it has been dropped off for them. We do not want classes interrupted by parents dropping off lunches or forgotten work. Thank you for reminding them of this procedure.

One more form to be filled out is in this envelope. Please complete the “One Call” form and return it by this Monday, September 8th along with all other emergency forms.

IT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT ALL EMERGENCY/PERMISSION FORMS THAT HAVE BEEN SENT HOME ARE COMPLETED AND TURNED INTO THE OFFICE NO LATER THAN THIS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH.

—————–
SAVE THE DATE! MONDAY, OCTOBER 27TH!
Hello everyone! The Saint James Academy Foundation will be hosting the 19th Annual Golf Tournament and Dinner October 27, 2008. The golf tournament will be during the day, followed immediately by the dinner and silent auction. It’s a very fun event and open to golfers of all levels and the dinner and silent auction is for everyone. We are also looking for volunteers to help. For more information or to volunteer, go to the SJA Foundation web site at www.sjafoundation.org or the link directly from the Saint James Academy web site. Sign ups will be coming soon on the web site and through this weekly envelope. Thanks.
Paul Barton SJAF Golf Tournament Chair

The office staff is still in need of someone to relieve them every other Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs. Melton who is willing to alternate Tuesdays with another parent. You are needed from noon until 1:00 to answer phones and help give some TLC to ill or injured students. This is a great way to earn your volunteer hours. Please call the office if you are interested.

This Friday, September 5th, there is noon dismissal. There will be day care. The faculty will be taking part in an Arts Attack In-Service.

The Eighth Grade will assist in the Liturgy this week. We invite you to join the parish and the academy students at our 8:00 Friday Mass each week. Installation of the Student Council Officers will immediately follow Mass.

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

For a New School Year

Good and gracious God,
as a new school year begins,
fill the hearts of our students with eagerness
to learn about the work you have created,
about themselves and
most of all,
about you.

Bless our teachers with gifts of wisdom and
patience that they might help their students
find the truth.

Gift our parents with generous hearts to
encourage and support their sons and daughters.

Help us all work together to form a community
of learning that teaches not only skills
for material success but all that we need
to live our faith fully in this world.
Amen

Welcome to the School Year 2008-2009! The faculty and staff began this year last Tuesday as we do every year by attending Mass together. Many attended a Religion workshop at the Town and Country Convention Center on Wednesday and all have worked very hard to have their rooms prepared to greet your students. We feel ready for a fantastic new year.

I have included in today’s envelope a letter from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges congratulating St. James Academy on achieving a full six-year accreditation. The faculty, staff, students and parents spent enormous amounts of time creating the Self-Study document and working with the visitation team that led to this accreditation. It was definitely an affirmation of all that we do here at the Academy and I thank all who contributed to this success.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

You may view this newsletter and all the year’s newsletters on our website at saintjamesacademy.com under “current news”. You may also sign up for notification that a new newsletter has been posted on line.

Please take the time to review all of the materials enclosed in today’s envelope. There are several forms that must be carefully read, completed and returned to the office no later than next Tuesday, September 2nd. Especially important are the medication dosage form and the white emergency card. Please make sure to complete BOTH sides of the white emergency card. Thank you.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that your children are aware that if you are not here by 3::00p.m. they
automatically will sign into day care. THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO USE THE OFFICE PHONE TO FIND OUT WHERE YOU ARE. The office phone is for emergency use only. Please make sure that your children are aware that they may not use the phone to set up last minute study dates, play dates, etc…

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL DAY CARE
Mrs. Anna Marie Howard will welcome students to her 4th Grade Classroom for before-school care. The
cost is $2.00 per day. All students arriving at school between 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. must go to her room.

All students should be dropped off for school in front of the school. Safety is our huge concern and having students in the Church parking lot when parishioners are parking in order to attend Mass can be very dangerous.

Coach Elbers will again be in charge of the after-school care program daily. Extended care is available from dismissal until 5:30 p.m. All students on campus who are not under the direct supervision of a parent at 3:00 p.m. will be sent to day care and parents will be responsible for payment of any fees. More information on this is included in this envelope.

At dismissal, if you get out of your car and come to the school, students must be under your control. Between 2:45 and 3:00 p.m., no student should be on the field, play equipment or playing with balls on the blacktop. This is so school personnel can account for all the children. No students are allowed in the back of the school or church parking lot unless they are under direct control of the parent. Your cooperation will ensure the safety of all the students.

If you would like your student to walk home or meet you somewhere other than at the Academy, I must have written permission filed in the school office, releasing the Academy from all liability. This permission form is in this envelope.

If your children are late for school they must come to the office and fill out a tardy slip and then present this slip to their teacher. The teacher decides if the reason for tardiness is marked ‘excused’ or ‘unexcused’. Any medical appointments are excused. However, it is preferred that a note is brought in from the physician’s office. Three ‘unexcused’ tardies will result in a detention. Though we realize at times it is unavoidable, it is disruptive to have students coming to classrooms late.

Due to our extensive use of class web pages and sharing academy events on our website, student’s pictures (without names) are often displayed. If you do NOT want your child’s picture included you must put this in writing and send it into the office. Thank you.

CHECK POLICY: By using a check for payment, you agree to the following terms: In the event your check is dishonored or returned for any reason, you authorize us to electronically (or by paper draft) re-present the check to your bank account for collection of the amount of the check, plus any applicable fees as permitted by state law.

There will be NO FRIDAY PIZZA OR HOT LUNCH PROGRAM UNTIL OCTOBER. We have spent this summer researching alternative hot lunch programs and will let you know what the final decision is before October. Thank you.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Next Thursday, September 4th please join us in the Parish Hall for Back To School Night. There will be a “casual bite-to-eat” for those of you coming directly from work. Please remember that this is for ADULTS ONLY. After the meeting in the hall you will have two periods to meet with your children’s teachers in their classroom.

The office is in need of someone to cover the phones, etc… from noon until 1:00 on Tuesdays. You can volunteer for every week or switch off with someone else every other week. We also need some ‘back up’ people for Monday-Fridays if someone is ill and cannot make it. Thank you.

The Parent Council will meet in the Ministry Center tomorrow, Thursday morning, August 28th at 8:00 a.m. All parents are welcome to attend. If you have an agenda item, please notify Dana Mueller at 792-8209.

The St. James Academy Advisory Board will have a business meeting Thursday evening, August 28th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Faculty Room.

We have a very special prayer request for Rita Keeley, wife of Richard Keeley who taught fifth grade the past nine years here at the academy. Mrs. Keeley has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be undergoing surgery next Wednesday. Please keep Rita, Richard and their wonderful family in your prayers.

Please join us for 8:00 Mass Friday morning. The Faculty will be assisting with the Liturgy.
